Take Action

An LGBTQ+ Call to Action Against Major Cuts to Healthcare, Food, & More!

Congress is currently considering huge cuts to programs that provide people with healthcare, food and more to pay for tax cuts for the rich and corporations, as well as big increases in spending to fund the military and mass deportations. LGBTQ+ people already experience higher rates of poverty than the general population. We, like other communities, need better and stronger programs, not more cuts, war, and attacks on our communities and families!

Check out this fact sheet to learn about the proposed cuts and the impacts on LGBTQ+ and people living with HIV.

Now is the time to get engaged! Together we can defeat these cuts!

Here are ways to oppose cuts to health care, food, and other programs that keep us alive and safe!

→  Contact your Congressional Representatives

You can call, email, or schedule an in-person visit to their offices, expressing your support for Medicaid, SNAP and other programs.

Find your local representatives.

→ Write an Op-ed/Sign-on Letter

Write a short opinion article in a local or state newspaper that can reach a large audience. Organizations can also put together a state sign-on letter with other community stakeholders to send to congressional leaders.

Check out our toolkit for samples.

→ Incorporate Advocacy into Pride

This year, Pride month will happen as federal lawmakers decide whether to cut social assistance. Take the opportunity to engage your local LGBTQ+ community and remind folks that access to healthcare and food insecurity are LGBTQ+ issues.

→ Share Your Story

Whether through a social media post or a letter to your representatives, your personal experience with these programs is evidence of why we need them fully funded.

Share your story with us!

→ Join a Protest

Find local protest against proposed cuts and bring your friends and family.

Use this online resource to find events near you.

→ Host a Community Screening and Discussion

Remind your community and lawmakers that we can create a world where everyone’s basic needs are met. Check out NCLR’s film We Are Abundant!: A Queer Vision of Economic Justice and download the Dream Kit for inspiration, community discussion and mobilization against the cuts.

→ Support a Local Anti-Poverty Organization

Work with local, state, and national advocates to organize protests, contact community members, and organize other opposition actions within your state.
